Some modern religious kerfuffles need to be understood. One of my major characters in the Spirit of Fire Saga wrote about that briefly. It only covers the earliest part of the depraved mind exploits.

Germaine had been teaching about Paul’s progression of rebellion in Romans. It had all started because humanity had come to the conclusion that God was a myth. It had blended into the growth of the United States into the worldly superpower.

She’d been startled to learn that humanism was the founding philosophy of the Renaissance. They had been consumed by coming out of the Dark Ages. That was defined as the period where humanity had fallen from the light of classical antiquity into the darkness of the church.

That had been coupled with the humanistic horror of the Reformation. For the humanists, the Church was a wonderful tool to get society bound up in the political power of Rome. Luther, Calvin, Wesley and the rest drove the humanists nearly mad.

Mankind was innately good and could find the solutions to society’s problems without the need for the old God myth. Using the evils of the political church, the humanists began the elimination of God from normal society. They were remarkably successful.

They created the separation of the sacred and the secular. More than that they made sure that the sacred was purely religious, with no direct contact with that old myth. They had no problem with religion. With it, they could keep the appearance of a Christian world where it belongs—powerless and with no connection to actual power.

By the nineteen sixties, mankind worshiped humanity. It was the source of what was good and true. Paul expressed it simply at the beginning of Romans, “Professing to be wise, they became fools.” The result was that the Lord gave them over to the lusts of their hearts and impurity. The result had been the free love movement of the hippies. Love was good, it should have no restrictions. Basically, love was reduced to sex.

It kept getting worse, as the rebellion grew. This was where the world began announcing that God was dead. Unrestricted sex naturally flowed toward depravity. Sex became hooking up, the partner didn’t matter, it was all about sexual release. And the rebellion against God grew immensely.

By the time of the new millennium, God took it to the last step of trying to rein mankind in. Romans says He gave them over to a depraved mind. Our culture had latched onto it like it was a real blessing. Man discovered that god didn’t create male and female. How could he? He didn’t exist. So sex with anyone under any circumstances became the norm.
