Why I believe in a young earth: Reason #1
Because the Bible tells me so
The great Swiss theologian Dr. Karl Barth was being honored in his old age for all the theological knowledge he had gathered, written, and taught over his lifetime. When the speaker invited him to the platform to address the audience, Dr. Barth asked the emcee, “What should I say to them?” The emcee said, “Tell us what the greatest truth is that you have discovered in God’s Word.” Dr. Barth’s answer has echoed down the corridors of time to our day. “The greatest truth I have learned is this: Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” What an example of childlike faith! How true that is. What good news that is too.
Still the greater fact is that the Bible is full of great truths. It will open to us a wealth of knowledge. When you avail yourself to its teachings you’ll soon find your cup is overflowing with blessing after blessing as each doubt and befuddled mindset is worked through. It not only cleanses your spirit (heart) but it will renew you mentally as well. This Word is everything it says it is, and blessed is everyone who has come to acknowledge that truth. Some would have us to believe the Bible is outdated and irrelevant to our culture. What a foolish statement! Just ponder its track record.
- It contains hundreds of prophetic messages, many of them given hundreds of years before the event, yet not one has missed the mark! Only our Lord God could orchestrate that.
- It tells us of life-changing power. To this millions would jump to their feet and give testimony.
- Where it makes reference to science-related topics, each has been substantiated by scientific findings and some not until our generation.
In Job 38:16 the Lord is speaking to Job:
“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?”
No science person took this verse seriously. In fact some even made fun of it until in 1980 indeed springs were found on the ocean floors. They are called “ocean vents.”
In Psalm 8:8
“…all that swim the paths of the sea…”
This is another case where some science professors mocked the Scriptures until huge rivers were discovered. Not just surface currents that were known since sailing times, but at various depths, criss-crossing currents have been found. These are used extensively by marine life to migrate from one place to another.
In Genesis 10:25
“Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time, the earth was divided…”
Most of our geologists finally accepted continental drift (plate tectonics) in the 1960s. The Bible tells us when it happened.
Where the Bible gives names of kings, a city, or a nation, for example, many scholars in recent times have taken exception to the biblical account, only having to recant when archeologists proved the Bible was correct again.
Many of those scientists who challenge the Bible’s accountability, because of conflicts with secular science teachings, need to realize their textbooks will be outdated in just a few years. Why? Well, it would be nice if the only reason were because new information is being added. However, more often it is because the “extra-scientific” beliefs in these textbooks are being shown errant! Now, which one do you want to live by?
Which do you trust: a 1884 science book or an 1884 Bible?
Often, when speaking on this subject, I will hold up a Bible printed in 1884 and a science book, also printed in 1884, then ask the crowd, “Which is still up to date and marketable? How foolish will today’s textbooks be viewed a hundred years from now?” How many are setting their Bibles aside now in order to hold on to what the textbooks are saying today?
